Below is an explanation of the system used to allocate the first round Initial Allocated Places and the foloowing rounds of Extra Places for all ILCA allocated championships.
Please keep in mind that some events and venues have considerations that have to be allowed for before completing the allocation of places.
Initial Allocated Places are calculated based on the number ILCA members registered by each country. These places are not issued on a linear scale compared to membership. This system is used to help and encourage countries with a lower membership and still enable a good mix of nations and sailors at all events.
EXAMPLE:
| Members | Places Issued (in total) |
|---|---|
| >9 | 1 |
| >19 | 2 |
| >59 | 3 |
| >149 | 4 |
| >249 | 5 |
| >399 | 6 |
| >549 | 7 |
With the above example a country with a registered membership of 162 would receive 4 Initial Allocated Places at the event. Note a country with 5 registered members would receive no Initial Allocated Places.
Often not all of the Initial Allocated Places issued are used by the entry closing date. When this happens any unused entry codes will be cancelled and become void. ILCA will then re-issue these Extra Allocated Places to countries who have requested them.
To issue the Extra Places ILCA uses a system that compares the difference between the registered country membership and the next point at which a place would have been issued in the Initial Allocated Place process.
EXAMPLE: (Using the above examples figures)
Note: The country with the lowest 'Difference to next place' will be issued the extra place.
| Country Members | Places already Issued | Difference to next place | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cnt1 | 53 | 2 | 7 |
| Cnt2 | 278 | 5 | 122 |
| Cnt3 | 5 | 0 | 5 |
With the above example an Extra Allocated Place would be issued to Cnt3. Then once the place has been issued Cnt3's number of members (for the issuing of Extra Allocated Places only) is increased to the point at which the place was issued (Cnt3's Members is increased from 5 to 10). If further places are available to be issued the process is then re-run.
EXAMPLE 2:
| Country Members | Places already Issued | Difference to next place | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cnt1 | 53 | 2 | 7 |
| Cnt2 | 278 | 5 | 122 |
| Cnt3 | 10 | 1 | 10 |
The next Extra Place would be issued to Cnt1. This process continues until either all available places have been issued or all requests for Extra Allocated Places have been met.
